That blue blob at 30N to 45N is the -ve EAMT over the Himalayas, Tibetan Plateau and Mongolian Mountains. We can expect that to turn to deep red (again) during the next 3 or 4 days and this will be bang on schedule. This is likely to send yet more planetary waves up into the upper stratosphere and may help to apply the final blow to trigger the major SSW several days later (perhaps around New Years Eve/Day). That's if downward propagation is still struggling by then. Surface impacts may well be seen more quickly than has been forecast by some. In any event, the poleward shift in +ve momentum is very timely for favouring high latitude blocking as well as making the lower troposphere highly conducive and receptive to any SSW impacts.

http://twitter.com/antmasiello/status/1 ... 7645115392
here's a moving 10-day mean 200mb streamfunction/waf. Notice the 20N subtropical anticyclones emanating from EH into Pac start with IO MJO. By the end of the loop, notice wave activity weakens and Asian anticyclones broaden. Wave absorption has intensified here.

when you see that kind of signature, it means eddy phase speeds increase in the Mid Latitudes and their momentum transfer is lame and poleward. The subpolar lows intensify and lead to increasing zonal flow.

this is why in the medium range, models seem broad, zonal with a tight gradient in the N PAC. Aleutian Low intensifies but the trough is broad. Yes the EA MT increased the jet extension, but it's because we are coming out of a recent -AAM cycle that this all looks like this.

Yes, we are transitioning and anomalies will appear to propagate equatorward as we enter 2019. However, you have to remember what we are coming out of and transitioning from to understand why phase 7-8 MJO is gonna have some lag this go-around.

daam/dt chart shows widespread positive tendency 0-30N and negative tendency north of that. The poleward spatial AAM anomalies are past peak state of the -AAM cycle. It's over.
the MJO is adding westerly momentum into the Tropical Atmosphere and that will eventually alter the pattern in about 15-20 days. Until then, the expanded Hadley Cell look will continue.

"" Effect of Madden–Julian Oscillation Occurrence Frequency on the Interannual Variability of Northern Hemisphere Stratospheric Wave Activity in Winter""

Abstract
This study uses reanalysis datasets and numerical experiments to investigate the influence of the occurrence frequency of the individual phases of the Madden–Julian oscillation (MJO) on the interannual variability of stratospheric wave activity in the middle and high latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere during boreal winter [November–February (NDJF)]. Our analysis reveals that the occurrence frequency of MJO phase 4 in winter is significantly positively correlated with the interannual variability of the Eliassen–Palm (E–P) flux divergence anomalies in the northern extratropical stratosphere; that is, higher (lower) occurrence frequency of MJO phase 4 corresponds to weaker (stronger) upward wave fluxes and increased (decreased) E–P flux divergence anomalies in the middle and upper stratosphere at mid-to-high latitudes, which implies depressed (enhanced) wave activity accompanied by a stronger (weaker) polar vortex in that region. The convection anomalies over the Maritime Continent related to MJO phase 4 excite a Rossby wave train that propagates poleward to middle and high latitudes, and is in antiphase with the climatological stationary waves of wavenumber 1 at middle and high latitudes. As the spatial distribution of the convection anomalies during MJO phase 7 has an almost opposite, but weaker, pattern to that during MJO phase 4, the occurrence frequency of MJO phase 7 has an opposite and weaker effect on the northern extratropical stratosphere to MJO phase 4. However, the other MJO phases (1, 2, 3, 5, 6, and 8) cannot significantly influence the northern extratropical stratosphere because the wave responses in these phases are neither totally in nor out of phase with the background stationary wavenumber 1.

http://journals.ametsoc.org/doi/pdf/10. ... -this-year

It plays an important role in the polar vortex split. This week, through non-linear dynamics, we will see this feature intensify.
This feature will see transient resonance that leads to a split the vortex. Here's the earlier GEOS run. Watch how that semi-permanent feature attaches with the upper strat ridge, causing the vortex to split. This is the beginning of a flip to a strong -NAO state ahead.
Also notice the increasing eddy heat flux ~ 60°E in the upper vortex. This is the stronger of the two vortices post-split that is still baroclinically-active. There is still a sufficient surf zone with this vortex. This is the follow-up warming in a week to 10 days.
Back to the Atlantic troposphere, that block formation near the UK is getting the green light from the strat above. Once the Pacific to N. America flow slows down and buckles, the direction of wave breaking in the Atlantic will shift equatorward. That's when the NAO tanks.
