It's probably time for a little update. Firstly thanks for all the best wishes so far. It is greatly appreciated.

This forecast was written and completed around 2 weeks ago with the research occurring over many months prior to this. So it may be only 6 days into winter, but to Tony and I this forecast is 2 weeks old and it is worth reassessing if there is anything we would change at this early juncture.

A lot of the forecast was based on the atmospheric response to the very strong El Nino and whether or not the stratospheric vortex could be taken down mid winter onwards. Well, I have to admit that I didn't quite expect to see the record stratospheric cold temperatures that we have experienced or are forecast to experience in the coming days. Yes, we knew it was a backs to the wall scenario with the HT effect wrt wQBO and reducing solar output, but the early season stratospheric vortex intensification (VI) has been impressive to say the least.

This has resulted in the late November and early December pattern seen so far with a vigorous stratospheric vortex transferring to a strong positive AO and NAO tropospherically and that this is set to continue for a little while yet. Sadly, it is no surprise to see 4 named storms already this storm season and the terrible flooding experienced in Cumbria yesterday. For the rest of the month we had forecast a continuance of the existing pattern - but did expect that the jet stream would begin to head south by the final third of the month ( perhaps to rescue the Alps ski season in time for Christmas). There are tentative signs that this could occur when we look at the 5 day cumulative anomaly pattern in around 10 days time from the GEFS:

This type of anomaly pattern is similar with the ECM ensembles upto day 15 with the exception that the negative anomaly over the UK and west Europe is still held a little more towards the Atlantic and there is a greater tendency for Scandi height rises by day 15.

So are we going to see the strat taking a hit in the coming weeks which will increase the chance of a SSW in Jan? Well there are tentative signs that the period of vortex Intensification may be coming to an end. It is very rare for a stratospheric vortex that starts strongly in November not to experience some kind of warming event as winter progresses. The traditional stratospheric response in EN years is for wave 1 displacement event - whether or not this is likely to create a SSW will remain to be seen - obviously we believed and discussed in the winter forecast that a SSW is likely and even though we have seen the strong strat VI period but only time will tell. The following highlighted strat pattern is the one that we should be looking out for in the coming weeks as it could translate to a stronger warming in January:

The FI strat forecasts are showing more disruption and the wave 1 pattern is frequently seen at the end of the run and in the ensembles that recretos has highlighted in the strat thread, but we are well aware of the fickle nature of these FI forecasts and the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow never seems to get any closer, but here is the latest strat chart anyway and there is no way that I would classify this in the same league just yet as the above arrowed example:

The stratospheric response to the EN is very dependent on the preceding tropospheric pattern. The wave 1 strat response ( note that this is Pacific based) is determined as a result of a precursor Atlantic side block - somewhere form the Greenland to Scandi area. I think that are best chance of this is from a Scandi block. Keep an eye out on the GFS runs - if you see a larger Scandi or Atlantic block by around day 10-12 then go and look at the top level strat charts by the end of the run and you will see that there will be stronger warming on these runs. But don't get too drawn in until we see something come into line within the 10 day range!

For future reference here is the precursor anomaly pattern as suggested by Polvani et al (http://www.columbia.edu/~lmp/paps/martius+polvani+davies-GRL-2009.pdf ). It will be worth correlating the areas where blocking occurs troposherically and the strat response - not just for SSW but the correlation between weaker wave events can be highlighted as well. Wave 2 events have a precursor block both Pacific based and an area to the west of Greenland.

I suspect that we will need both a wave 1 combined with a secondary wave 2 event to bring down the vortex this year and the timings of this will be critical. No more 'half' SSW's this year please.

Anyway the early December is verifying pretty well, the strat vortex is pretty strong but can be brought down still.

Now, I am no expert with the GWO like Stewart or Tamara, but if we look at the GLAAM plots then we will see that there was a drop in November of the AAM, but this has since recovered. This drop coincided with the positive east Asia MT event.

Now we see that MT events are back in positive territory - except for the all critical EA sector. My thoughts are that when we see a Scandi high followed by the +ve EAMT aligned with tropical convection activity then we will have the perfect launchpad for a strong strat warming. Only thing is I admit to be not quite sure exactly where we need to see the pulse of tropical convection occur in the strong nino base........

So we wouldn't change the forecast presently and are quite happy, but tentatively looking up at the strat and wondering whether it will be another one of those years..https://forum.netweather.tv/topic/84508-netweather-winter-forecast-201516/?do=findComment&comment=3297750

Update van Chio. So far, so good.

Verder - weer terug on topic: Ook zachte winters kunnen spectakel geven.
